Speckled alder is the dominant plant in alder swamps throughout the coniferous forest region. It grows on wet, mucky soil (highly decomposed plant remains), acid to neutral peat, and on wet to moist, mineral soil. It is a tall shrub (or small tree) that spreads, making it useful for revegetating large, wet areas.
